There are millions of people suffering from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) all over the world. The most vulnerable group is the elderly who live alone and are prone to severe consequences caused by heart problems. Teltonika Telemedic has come with a solution to help these people.

The world population is getting older. According to United Nations data, in 2019 there were 703 million older persons aged 65 or over. In the next three decades, the number of elderly people is projected to more than double, reaching over 1.5 billion persons in 2050. Thus, by 2050, 1 in 6 people in the world will be over the age of 65.

It is important to mention that older age is characterized by the emergence of several complex health states, particularly, heart-related issues. According to the data of American Heart Association, 83.6 million American adults (1 in 3) have 1 or more types of CVD. Of these, 42.2 million are estimated to be ≥60 years of age. The prevalence of CVD, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke, increases from about 40% in men and women 40-59 years of age, to 70-75% in persons 60-79 years of age, and to 79-86% among those aged 80 years or older. It was also found that heart diseases were the main cause of death in the elderly population.

Elderly people with heart diseases are at a greater risk to suffer death because there is a chance they wouldn’t be able to make a call to their carer or family in the event of cardiac arrest or stroke. Having in mind that care home availability shrinks every year, the number of elderly living alone is expected to increase.

At Teltonika Telemedic we came up with the solution to monitor the heart rate of an elder person preventing possible fatal consequences. The solution includes our GH5200 personal tracker and Xiaomi Mi Band 2 smartwatch that monitors heart rate.

The smartwatch and the GH5200 (that communicate together via Bluetooth) are distributed for an elder person who lives alone and suffers from a heart problem. The carer or responsible family members receive constant GPRS-based notifications about the state of their relative or patient. Thanks to Xiaomi Mi Band 2, in an occurrence of heart rate deviations from the configured range, an alarm would be sent instantly to an online platform or the responsible people. They would be able to follow and react quickly to the changing condition of their relative or patient.

Heart problems sometimes cause fainting, therefore, the likelihood of fall-down is higher. GH2000 would detect this scenario and send an instant alarm to the online platform.

With the help of two-way communication mode, the elder, if conscious, may also make a call to one of the contacts already pre-programmed in the device. Similarly, the carer or his family can initiate a call.

This project was carried out in partnership with Rebitral SRL, one of the companies of the BSQSECURITY group, which deals with the development of technologies aimed at the safety of things and people.
